The third day of our North Bali Wilderness Expedition begins with one of the most iconic and unforgettable experiences in North Bali—a traditional canoe crossing across the tranquil waters of Lake Tamblingan.
As the morning mist gently rises above the lake, we leave our campsite and make our way to the sacred Gubug Temple, one of the most photographed temples on the shores of Lake Tamblingan. Surrounded by ancient rainforest and reflected beautifully in the calm water, the temple creates a peaceful atmosphere that perfectly captures the spiritual essence of Bali’s wilderness.
From Gubug Temple, we board a traditional wooden canoe operated by local villagers. Unlike modern boats, these handcrafted canoes have been used by generations of local communities to cross the lake and reach the sacred temples hidden within the surrounding forest. As we quietly paddle across Lake Tamblingan, the silence of nature is broken only by the sound of birds singing and the gentle movement of the water beneath the canoe.
The journey across the lake offers breathtaking views in every direction. Dense tropical rainforest surrounds the shoreline, while the towering mountains provide a spectacular backdrop. The peaceful atmosphere makes this one of the most memorable moments of the entire expedition.
Our canoe journey ends at the sacred Ulun Danu Tamblingan Temple, one of the oldest lakeside temples in Bali. Hidden among ancient trees, this historic temple has long been an important place of worship for local communities who honor the lake as a sacred source of life. Leaving the lakeside behind, the adventure continues through a peaceful agricultural village where visitors experience another side of North Bali’s authentic countryside. Walking through the village, you will pass neatly arranged vegetable gardens filled with cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, chilies, onions, leafy greens, and many other seasonal crops. As we leave the farmland behind, the landscape gradually transforms once again into dense tropical forest. This marks the beginning of one of the most exciting parts of our expedition—exploring 10 Hidden Waterfalls tucked away deep within North Bali’s untouched wilderness.
Unlike the famous waterfalls that attract large crowds, these hidden waterfalls remain largely unknown, making each discovery feel like uncovering a secret of nature. Throughout the day, we trek along forest trails, cross crystal-clear streams, and walk beneath towering trees while visiting a series of beautiful waterfalls, each with its own unique character.
Some waterfalls cascade gently over moss-covered cliffs into natural emerald pools, while others plunge dramatically from great heights, creating refreshing mist and the soothing sound of rushing water. Here, we set up our campsite beside the waterfall, allowing nature to become our home for another unforgettable night. The fresh mountain air, the soothing sound of cascading water, and the relaxing atmosphere create the perfect environment to unwind after an incredible day of exploration.
As darkness falls, we enjoy dinner together while listening to the gentle roar of Canging Waterfall beneath a sky filled with stars. Camping in this hidden paradise is a truly unique experience, offering the rare opportunity to spend the night surrounded by one of North Bali’s most beautiful natural landscapes.
