Mount Lesung Trekking – A Challenging Climb with Spectacular Rewards

Our hike to Mount Lesung was one of the most memorable adventures of our trip to Bali. It was a full day of breathtaking scenery, physical challenge, rich cultural experiences, and genuine Balinese hospitality. If you’re looking to discover a quieter and more authentic side of the island, this trek is an experience you’ll never forget.

Our day began early with a 6:30 AM pickup from our hotel. Our driver, Dewa, greeted us with a warm smile and made us feel welcome from the very beginning. Although it was a three-hour drive to the starting point in North Bali, the journey passed quickly thanks to Dewa’s friendly personality and his fascinating stories about Balinese culture, villages, and everyday life.

Along the way, we made a stop at one of Bali’s beautiful floating temples, peacefully resting beside the lake. The calm morning atmosphere and stunning reflections on the water made it the perfect place to stretch our legs and enjoy one of Bali’s most picturesque landscapes before continuing deeper into the mountains.

When we arrived at the trailhead, we met our local trekking guide, Made Moyo, whose experience and enthusiasm immediately gave us confidence for the adventure ahead.

The trek began by entering the ancient rainforest surrounding Mount Lesung. The trail led us beneath towering tropical trees, through lush vegetation, and along quiet forest paths rarely visited by tourists. Made Moyo shared his extensive knowledge of the rainforest, pointing out native plants, medicinal herbs, towering ficus trees, and explaining the spiritual significance of the mountain to the local Balinese community.

The climb was definitely challenging. Steep sections of the trail tested our endurance, and there were several moments when we needed to stop and catch our breath. Fortunately, Made Moyo was incredibly patient and encouraging throughout the journey. He never rushed us, always allowing us to walk at a comfortable pace while making sure we remained safe and motivated.

After a rewarding climb, we finally reached the summit of Mount Lesung, standing approximately 1,865 metres above sea level. At the top sits a sacred temple, adding a deeply spiritual atmosphere to the mountain. Surrounded by cool mountain air and peaceful forest, we took a well-deserved break while enjoying refreshments prepared by our guide.

Standing on the summit, knowing how much effort it had taken to reach the top, made the experience incredibly satisfying. It wasn’t just about the views—it was about the journey, the determination, and the peaceful feeling of standing on one of Bali’s sacred mountains.

The descent took us back through the rainforest, completing approximately five hours of trekking. Although we were pleasantly tired, the adventure wasn’t over yet.

One of the highlights of the day was waiting for us at Lake Tamblingan, where a traditional wooden dugout canoe was ready to take us across the tranquil lake. Gliding silently across the calm water, surrounded by ancient rainforest and misty mountains, was one of the most peaceful experiences of our entire holiday. It was the perfect contrast to the physical challenge of climbing Mount Lesung.

After crossing the lake, we enjoyed a delicious traditional Balinese lunch, freshly prepared using local ingredients. Sitting down to a warm meal after such an adventurous day was the perfect way to relax before beginning the journey back.

Throughout the entire experience, both Dewa and Made Moyo were exceptional. Dewa’s friendly service and safe driving made the long journey enjoyable, while Made Moyo’s patience, encouragement, and deep knowledge of the mountain transformed a difficult hike into an unforgettable experience.

Looking back, this tour offered everything we could have hoped for: a rewarding mountain climb, pristine rainforest, sacred temples, peaceful canoeing across Lake Tamblingan, delicious local food, and outstanding local hospitality.

This is not an easy hike, and a reasonable level of fitness is definitely recommended. However, if you enjoy nature, adventure, and discovering the authentic side of Bali away from the crowds, Mount Lesung Trekking is absolutely worth every step.

We would highly recommend this adventure to anyone seeking an unforgettable trekking experience in North Bali. It was excellent value for money and one of the greatest highlights of our entire visit to Bali.
