More Than a Tour: Discovering the Soul of Mayong Village Through Dedi’s Eyes

Some tours show you beautiful places. Others change the way you see the world.

Our visit to Mayong Village was much more than a countryside walk—it became one of the most meaningful experiences of our journey through Bali. And that was entirely thanks to Dedi, a guide whose passion for his village transformed a simple trek into a deeply personal cultural experience.

From the moment we met him, it was clear that this wasn’t going to be a scripted tour. Dedi wasn’t simply guiding visitors through his village—he was welcoming us into his home.

Born and raised in Mayong, every path we followed held a story. Every rice terrace, every plantation, every farmer we greeted was part of his own life. His connection to the land was genuine, and his pride in his community was impossible to miss.

As we walked through emerald-green rice fields, quiet village lanes, tropical plantations, and peaceful countryside, Dedi shared stories that brought the landscape to life. He spoke about childhood memories, traditional farming methods, local customs, and the values that continue to shape life in rural Bali.

What impressed us most was the respect he showed to everyone we met along the way.

Whether greeting farmers harvesting rice under the morning sun or chatting with elderly villagers working in their gardens, Dedi treated every person with warmth and admiration. It became clear that this tour wasn’t only about showing beautiful scenery—it was about honouring the people whose hard work has preserved these traditions for generations.

Despite sharing complex ideas about Balinese culture and agriculture, Dedi explained everything in clear, natural English that was easy to understand. He never rushed us, always adapted the pace to suit our interests, and patiently answered every question we asked.

His ability to listen was just as remarkable as his ability to teach.

Rather than following a fixed schedule, he paid attention to what fascinated us most, allowing conversations to develop naturally. The experience felt personal, relaxed, and wonderfully authentic.

One of the most eye-opening moments of the day came while learning about rice cultivation.

Like many visitors, we had always taken rice for granted. It was simply something that appeared on our plates every day without much thought.

Walking through the rice terraces with Dedi completely changed that.

We watched farmers carefully tending the fields, learned how rice is planted, harvested, dried, and, in some places, still processed entirely by hand using traditional methods passed down through generations.

For the first time, we truly understood the enormous amount of dedication, patience, and physical effort hidden behind one of the world’s simplest foods.

The experience gave us a completely new appreciation for rural life—not only in Bali, but everywhere.

After our walk, we were invited to enjoy a simple homemade Balinese lunch prepared by the local family.

There was nothing extravagant about the meal.

It was honest, traditional, and made with ingredients grown in the very fields we had just explored.

As we sat together overlooking the peaceful countryside, slowly enjoying each bite, something unexpected happened.

After tasting the freshly cooked rice, one of us quietly said:

“I just realized that maybe I’ve never really eaten rice before in my life.”

Everyone smiled.

It perfectly captured what we were all feeling.

The rice wasn’t simply delicious—it carried meaning.

Knowing where it came from, understanding the work behind every grain, and sharing it with the people who had grown it transformed an everyday meal into something extraordinary.

Its flavour was authentic, pure, and inseparable from everything we had experienced throughout the day.

Looking back, Mayong Village offered far more than beautiful scenery.

It gave us a deeper understanding of Balinese culture, agriculture, community, and hospitality.

Most importantly, it reminded us that meaningful travel isn’t measured by the number of places you visit, but by the people you meet and the stories you carry home.

A heartfelt thank you to Dedi for opening not only your village but also your heart to us.

Your passion, kindness, patience, and love for your community made this one of the most memorable experiences of our entire journey through Bali.

If you’re searching for an authentic cultural experience far from the crowds, where you can truly connect with local people, learn about traditional village life, and discover the real Bali, the Mayong Village Walking Tour is an experience we cannot recommend highly enough.

This isn’t just another tour.

It’s an invitation to see Bali through the eyes of someone who has loved this land his entire life.
