If you’re searching for an authentic mountain adventure far away from Bali’s crowded tourist attractions, Mount Lesung Trekking is an experience that should be at the very top of your list.
My husband and I chose this trek because we wanted to escape the busy city life and experience the untouched natural beauty of Bali. It turned out to be the highlight of our entire holiday and without question our favourite activity on the island.
A Scenic Journey into North Bali
Before booking, the team at Bali Local Tour Guide informed us that our accommodation was located quite far from the mountain.
They were completely transparent about the journey, which we really appreciated.
In reality, the drive was much more enjoyable than we expected.
Our friendly driver collected us from our hotel at 5:00 AM, and as the sun slowly began to rise, we travelled through beautiful Balinese villages, rice fields, and mountain landscapes toward the trailhead.
After approximately two hours, we arrived at the national park office to meet our experienced local guide before beginning our adventure.
Breakfast with a View of Java Island
Before starting the main climb, our guide led us to a beautiful viewpoint where he pointed across the sea toward Java Island.
Standing there in the cool mountain air while looking across to another Indonesian island was an unforgettable way to begin the day.
We enjoyed our breakfast surrounded by peaceful scenery before continuing our journey into the rainforest.
It was also during this stop that we realised how wonderfully quiet this mountain really is.
Apart from seeing a few local people near the beginning of the trail, we would spend almost the entire day completely alone in nature.
Hiking Through an Untouched Rainforest
The trail climbed steadily through dense tropical rainforest filled with towering trees, moss-covered rocks, colourful plants, and fresh mountain air.
Unlike many popular trekking destinations in Bali, Mount Lesung remains wonderfully uncrowded.
For hours we didn’t encounter another tourist.
The silence was remarkable.
Only birdsong, the sound of the wind through the trees, and our footsteps accompanied us along the trail.
Coming from a busy city, this peaceful atmosphere was exactly what we had hoped to find.
Learning About Bali’s Sacred Mountain
One of the things that made the trek especially enjoyable was our knowledgeable local guide.
As we climbed higher, he shared fascinating stories about the geological formation of Mount Lesung, the surrounding forests, local wildlife, and the important spiritual role the mountain plays in Balinese culture.
Rather than simply leading us to the summit, he helped us truly understand the landscape we were exploring.
His stories transformed the hike into a much richer cultural experience.
Reaching the Sacred Summit Temple
After several hours of hiking, we finally reached the summit.
Waiting there was an ancient temple that has served as a sacred place of worship for generations.
Standing at the top, surrounded by dense rainforest and panoramic mountain views, we experienced an incredible feeling of peace.
Unlike many famous viewpoints around Bali, there were no crowds, no queues, and no noise.
It felt as though we had the entire mountain to ourselves.
Moments like these are becoming increasingly rare while travelling, making the experience even more special.
Nature’s Unexpected Surprises
The journey back down the mountain offered even more memorable moments.
At one point, we were lucky enough to observe a lizard laying its eggs in the forest—something we had never witnessed before.
Later, we unexpectedly met a bride and groom having their wedding photographs taken among the beautiful mountain scenery, adding another unforgettable memory to the day.
Each section of the trail seemed to reveal something completely different.
Crossing Sacred Lake Tamblingan
One of the highlights of the entire adventure came after descending the mountain.
We arrived at the peaceful shores of Lake Tamblingan, where we crossed the lake in a traditional wooden canoe.
The calm water reflected the surrounding rainforest and blue sky perfectly, creating one of the most beautiful landscapes we experienced during our time in Bali.
Along the shoreline stood another ancient temple, adding to the spiritual atmosphere that makes this region so unique.
It was an incredibly peaceful way to conclude the trekking adventure.
Thoughtful Service for Every Guest
One detail that particularly impressed us was the team’s attention to our dietary requirements.
As both my husband and I are gluten intolerant, we asked before the tour whether a suitable breakfast could be provided.
Without hesitation, Bali Jungle Trekking prepared a gluten-free breakfast and included plenty of fresh tropical fruit, ensuring we had more than enough energy for the climb.
It was a thoughtful gesture that showed how much they genuinely care about their guests.
After the trek, we enjoyed a delicious lunch before our driver kindly offered to visit another nearby temple.
Although we were quite tired after completing the hike, we really appreciated that the option was available.
