Away from the Shops and Beaches – Discovering the Real Bali

When most people think of Bali, they imagine busy beaches, shopping streets, beach clubs, and crowded tourist attractions. While those places certainly have their charm, I wanted something completely different. I wanted to experience the Bali that locals know—the peaceful forests, hidden waterfalls, sacred lakes, and authentic village life.
That’s exactly what I found with Bali Local Tour Guide.
I chose the Jungle and Waterfall Day Trek, a full-day adventure that combined rainforest trekking, hidden waterfalls, a traditional canoe crossing on Lake Tamblingan, and an authentic Balinese lunch overlooking the breathtaking Twin Lakes.
From the moment the day began, I knew this experience would be unlike any other.
Leaving the busy southern part of the island behind, we travelled into the cool mountains of North Bali, where the scenery changed dramatically. Rice terraces gave way to dense tropical rainforest, and the air became fresh and cool as we approached the Twin Lakes region.

If you’re travelling with a small group—or even better, on a quieter day—you may have the opportunity to swim beneath the waterfalls with very few other people around.
Taking a refreshing swim beneath a tropical waterfall became one of the highlights of my entire holiday.
The adventure continued with a traditional canoe crossing of Lake Tamblingan. Sitting quietly in a wooden canoe while gliding across the calm, sacred lake was an unforgettable experience. The surrounding rainforest reflected perfectly on the still water, creating an atmosphere of complete peace that felt worlds away from Bali’s busy tourist centres.
After the trek, we stopped for lunch at a local restaurant overlooking both Lake Tamblingan and Lake Buyan. The panoramic views were absolutely spectacular, but what impressed me even more was the food.
The traditional Balinese lunch was delicious, full of fresh local flavours and homemade ingredients. One dish in particular completely won me over—the spicy Balinese chilli sauce (sambal).
It was, without question, the best sambal I tasted during my entire holiday.
I searched for that same incredible flavour throughout the rest of my trip, ordering sambal in restaurants across Bali, but nothing ever quite matched the one served with this unforgettable lunch overlooking the Twin Lakes.
Looking back, this tour gave me exactly what I had been searching for.
It wasn’t about luxury or famous landmarks. It was about experiencing Bali’s untouched rainforest, swimming beneath hidden waterfalls, learning about local traditions, enjoying authentic village hospitality, and slowing down enough to appreciate the island’s extraordinary natural beauty.
For anyone planning this adventure, I would recommend bringing a few essentials in your daypack: comfortable hiking shoes, swimwear, a towel, wet wipes, hand sanitiser, and a little cash for any small personal expenses or entrance fees that may apply at certain stops. Being prepared allows you to fully enjoy every part of the journey.
