As experienced hikers from Canada, my girlfriend and I have completed many mountain trails around the world, so when we planned our trip to Bali, climbing Mount Batur for sunrise was high on our list.
After researching several operators, we chose Bali Local Tour Guide, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of our entire holiday.
From beginning to end, everything was organised professionally, and the experience exceeded every expectation.
An Early Morning Start to an Incredible Adventure
Like every Mount Batur sunrise trek, our journey began long before dawn.
After being picked up from our accommodation, we travelled through the quiet Balinese countryside to the starting point of the trek, where we met our guide, Tri.
From the first few minutes, we knew we were in excellent hands.
Tri was friendly, confident, highly experienced, and incredibly knowledgeable about Mount Batur and its surroundings.
After a short briefing, we switched on our headlamps and began climbing beneath a sky filled with stars.
Reaching the Summit Before the Crowds
Because we are experienced hikers, we maintained a fast pace throughout the ascent.
Tri immediately recognised our fitness level and adjusted the speed accordingly, allowing us to continue almost without stopping.
The flexibility to adapt the trek to each guest’s ability is something we really appreciated.
After just one hour and fifteen minutes, we reached the summit.
Arriving so early meant we had something that many visitors never experience—peace and quiet.
Before the crowds arrived, Tri found us one of the best viewpoints on the mountain and carefully laid out mats so we could comfortably relax while watching the stars slowly disappear as dawn approached.
It was a magical moment.
The silence, the cool mountain air, and the spectacular night sky created an atmosphere we will never forget.
Breakfast Above the Clouds
As the first colours of sunrise began appearing on the horizon, Tri prepared a delicious mountain breakfast for us.
Freshly cooked breakfast, accompanied by hot coffee, tasted even better after the early morning climb.
Sitting above the clouds while enjoying breakfast as the sun slowly illuminated the volcanic landscape was simply unforgettable.
Watching the first rays of sunlight reveal Mount Agung, the surrounding caldera, and Lake Batur was one of the most beautiful sunrises we have ever witnessed.
Because we had reached the summit so early, we were able to enjoy these incredible moments in relative peace before larger groups arrived.
That extra time made the experience feel much more personal and relaxed.
Exploring the Volcano with a Local Expert
Rather than immediately heading back down, Tri took us on a fascinating walk around the summit crater.
She explained the volcanic history of Mount Batur, pointed out the areas where geothermal steam continues to escape from deep beneath the earth, and shared interesting stories about why the mountain is considered sacred in Balinese culture.
One of the most unique experiences was tasting the naturally filtered mineral water collected from the volcanic steam vents.
As someone who appreciates good water, I can honestly say it was among the freshest and most enjoyable water I’ve ever tasted.
It was another unexpected highlight that made the experience even more memorable.
More Than Just a Guide
Throughout the morning, Tri constantly shared interesting information, answered every question we asked, and happily stopped whenever we wanted photographs.
She knew all the best viewpoints and took countless pictures for us, allowing us to fully enjoy the experience without worrying about capturing the perfect shot ourselves.
Her enthusiasm for the mountain was contagious.
It was obvious that she genuinely loved sharing this beautiful place with visitors.
A Fast and Fun Descent
After spending plenty of time exploring the summit, we began our descent.
Rather than simply retracing the crowded main trail, Tri led us along quieter routes that allowed us to move quickly while avoiding much of the traffic.
As hikers, descending at a faster pace is something we really enjoy, and Tri matched our speed perfectly.
We reached the bottom in under an hour, smiling from ear to ear after an unforgettable morning on the volcano.
