Mount Sanghyang Trekking Trail

Mount Sanghyang Trekking Trail – North Bali

Mount Sanghyang Trekking Trail is one of the quieter and less-visited mountain trails in North Bali. Located in the highlands of Buleleng, Mount Sanghyang offers a peaceful trekking experience through natural mountain forest, with a beautiful sunrise viewpoint overlooking some of Bali’s major volcanic peaks.

Unlike the busy Mount Batur sunrise trek, the Mount Sanghyang trail remains relatively quiet and natural. The experience is more about walking through the forest, experiencing the mountain atmosphere, and reaching a peaceful sunrise viewpoint rather than following a highly developed tourist trail.

The mountain reaches approximately 2,093 metres, while the northern summit area used for the sunrise experience is around 2,074 metres. A recent independent hiking report recorded approximately 5.3 km, around 590 metres of elevation gain, and a moderate difficulty level for the trail.

Mount Sanghyang Trekking Trailhead

The Mount Sanghyang trail is accessed from the Tamblingan area of North Bali. The approach follows Jalan Danau Tamblingan before continuing along a rough mountain road toward the upper mountain area.

For the trekking route described on this map, the trail enters the forest from the local access point near Pura Penataran Gunung Sanghyang.

The final approach to the mountain is not the same as reaching a conventional tourist attraction. Some sections of the access road are rough and unsealed, which is one reason why first-time visitors may find the trailhead difficult to locate without local knowledge. A recent hiking report also noted that the beginning of the trail can be difficult to find and that access is via the Tamblingan Village side.

What Is the Mount Sanghyang Trekking Trail Like?

The trek begins in the darkness in the early morning for those coming specifically for sunrise.

After leaving the parking area, the route enters the mountain forest. The first part of the trail is relatively gentle, allowing hikers to gradually adjust to the climb before the terrain becomes steeper.

The forest is one of the highlights of Mount Sanghyang. Tall trees, cool mountain air and the absence of large crowds create a very different atmosphere from Bali’s more commercialised sunrise mountains.

There are several resting areas along the route. The trail gradually becomes steeper as you approach the upper mountain, and some sections can be loose, dusty, slippery or require careful footing.

The upper section is particularly important on the descent. Fixed ropes are present on some steeper sections and can be useful when the trail is slippery.

Sunrise at Mount Sanghyang

The main attraction for an early-morning trek is the sunrise viewpoint below the northern summit.

Interestingly, the best sunrise viewpoint is not necessarily the highest point of the mountain.

A recent hike documented a viewpoint just below the North Peak where the surrounding mountains can be seen much more clearly. From this area, hikers may see Mount Agung, Mount Abang, Mount Catur, Mount Pohen, Mount Pengelengan and other mountain landscapes depending on weather and visibility.

On exceptionally clear mornings, distant mountains on Java may also become visible.

However, mountain weather changes quickly. Sunrise colours, clear mountain views and a sea of clouds cannot be guaranteed on every trek.

For this reason, the forest journey itself is an important part of the Mount Sanghyang experience.

Mount Sanghyang North Peak

After enjoying the sunrise viewpoint, hikers can continue toward the Mount Sanghyang North Peak.

The North Peak offers wider views toward the western side of Bali. The route then continues back through the upper forest and descending sections of the mountain.

The South Peak is slightly higher, but the North Peak area is more attractive for views and the sunrise experience. A recent hiking report places the North Peak at approximately 2,074 metres, with the slightly higher South Peak about 500 metres farther away.

Forest, Shrines and Local Mountain Culture

Mount Sanghyang is more than simply a mountain viewpoint.

The route passes several small sacred shrines and temple areas. These places are part of the spiritual landscape of the mountain and should be treated respectfully.

Before entering the forest, local guides may also take time to pray and ask for protection before beginning the trek. This reflects the traditional Balinese relationship between people, mountains and the natural environment.

For visitors travelling with a local guide, this can provide an opportunity to understand Mount Sanghyang not simply as a hiking trail, but as part of the local cultural landscape.

Trekking Difficulty

Mount Sanghyang is generally considered a moderate mountain trek.

It does not require technical climbing equipment, but hikers should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable walking on uneven natural terrain.

The trail includes:

  • Natural forest paths
  • Steeper uphill sections
  • Loose and dusty terrain
  • Slippery sections, particularly after rain
  • Steep downhill sections
  • Fixed ropes in some areas
  • Several resting points
  • Early-morning hiking in darkness

A recent independent trail report recorded approximately 5.3 km, around 590 metres of ascent, and classified the route as moderate. The same report describes approximately 1.5–2 hours for the ascent and 1–1.5 hours for the descent, depending on breaks and conditions.

For sunrise trekking, however, the overall experience takes longer because hikers normally move slowly in the darkness and allow time to wait for sunrise.

How Early Should You Start?

For a sunrise trek, the exact starting time depends on the season, weather and desired sunrise location.

Bali Local Tour Guide currently describes its private Mount Sanghyang sunrise experience as starting the trek at approximately 3:00 AM, with hotel pickup around 1:00 AM for guests using the full transportation package.

The exact departure time can be adjusted by the local guide according to sunrise time, guest fitness and trail conditions.

Why Trek Mount Sanghyang With a Local Guide?

Mount Sanghyang is not a highly developed tourist trekking destination.

The trailhead can be difficult for first-time visitors to identify, particularly when arriving in complete darkness. There are also junctions in the forest where taking the wrong trail can lead toward a different mountain route.

A local guide can help with:

  • Finding the correct trail entrance
  • Navigating the forest in darkness
  • Choosing the best sunrise viewpoint
  • Understanding local shrines and mountain traditions
  • Moving safely through slippery sections
  • Adjusting the pace according to weather and fitness
  • Providing local knowledge that is difficult to obtain from a map alone

For visitors who are unfamiliar with the North Bali mountain trails, this can make the experience considerably more comfortable.
