For anyone looking for a serious Mount Agung trekking experience, the Mount Agung Sunrise Trekking Tour via Besakih Temple is an adventure that demands preparation but delivers an unforgettable reward.
I joined the trek with a local guide organized by Bali Local Tour Guide, and from the beginning, I had an awesome experience. The guide was professional, friendly, and made me feel safe throughout the entire climb.
A Challenging Mount Agung Trek
I consider myself quite fit, training around five times a week and regularly hiking in the Swiss Alps with around 2,000 meters of elevation gain and loss in a day.
Even with that experience, the Mount Agung sunrise trek is a serious hike.
The route involves approximately 1,800 meters of elevation gain and around 16 kilometers of hiking, including the ascent and descent. The guide set a good pace, with several breaks along the way.
We gained elevation quite quickly, so we eventually took a longer break of around 2.5 hours below the summit before continuing toward the top.
Through the Jungle Toward the Summit
Until reaching the rocky section, the climb is not particularly technical. It is mainly a steady ascent through the jungle, with the elevation gradually building.
The final rocky section is considerably more challenging. Based on the Swiss hiking scale, I would personally rate this part around T3+.
It was still manageable without hiking poles, although there were moments when using a hand for support was helpful.
For experienced hikers, the technical difficulty is manageable, but the overall combination of distance, elevation gain, darkness, and lack of sleep makes this a demanding adventure.
Reaching the Summit for Sunrise
After all the effort, reaching the summit was absolutely worth it.
The sunrise from Mount Agung was unbelievably beautiful. We spent time at the summit taking plenty of photos and enjoying the incredible views.
Standing at the top after climbing through the darkness and jungle made the entire journey feel incredibly rewarding.
It is one of those moments when you realize why people are willing to wake up in the middle of the night and push themselves through such a demanding climb.
Running Back Down Mount Agung
After enjoying the sunrise and taking many photos, we decided to run down the mountain.
Altogether, we had just under six hours of actual hiking time for the ascent and descent.
Despite the demanding route and the fact that we had not slept, the hike did not feel excessively exhausting for me, partly because of my fitness level and the longer breaks we took.
Of course, this can be very different depending on the fitness and hiking experience of each participant.
A Safe and Enjoyable Experience With Our Guide
One of the highlights of the experience was our local Mount Agung guide.
He always made me feel safe, which is especially important when climbing a mountain like Agung in the dark and dealing with more technical terrain near the summit.
We also had a lot of fun together during the trek. The guide even mentioned that he wasn’t used to customers moving as quickly as I did!
His ability to adjust the pace and provide breaks helped make the experience both enjoyable and comfortable.
Prepare Properly for Mount Agung
This is not the easiest hike for most people, and I would strongly recommend being honest with yourself about your fitness level and hiking experience before booking the trek.
The guides are willing to take plenty of breaks and help participants reach the summit, but the mountain still requires genuine physical effort.
If you decide to do the Mount Agung Sunrise Trekking Tour, come properly prepared.
Good hiking shoes are important, especially for the rocky section. You should also understand that you will be hiking at night, gaining significant elevation, and potentially getting very little or no sleep beforehand.
For experienced and well-prepared hikers, however, the challenge is part of the fun.
The Sunrise Makes It Worth It
Overall, the Mount Agung Sunrise Trek via Besakih Temple was an awesome experience.
The climb is challenging, but when you finally reach the summit and see the sunrise over Bali from Mount Agung, all the effort feels worthwhile.
With a professional local guide, a sensible pace, appropriate breaks, good hiking shoes, and an honest assessment of your own fitness, this can be an incredibly rewarding adventure.
If you know what you’re getting into, the Mount Agung sunrise trek is a lot of fun — and the breathtaking sunrise at the summit is the perfect reward for all the effort it takes to get there.
