Welcome to Munduk.

We are local people and local trekking guides from Munduk Village, North Bali, and we are happy to share practical information to help travelers explore our village independently.

You do not have to book a tour to discover Munduk.

If you have your own scooter or car, you can explore the waterfalls independently.

If you are traveling with a private driver, you can make the route even easier by arranging a different pickup point at the end of the trek.

And if you prefer to support the local community and experience Munduk with someone who knows the trails personally, you can also hire a local guide.

This guide explains how we recommend doing it.

Please take a few minutes to read this guide carefully before starting your trek.

Our Local Recommendation: Start From Golden Valley Waterfall

If you are coming to Munduk independently, one of the most practical ways to explore the waterfall trail is to start from the highest waterfall in our recommended route — Golden Valley Waterfall.

This allows you to walk down through the waterfalls and eventually finish near the Munduk main road, instead of walking back to your starting point.

The route we recommend is:

START – Munduk Village and Waterfalls Trekking Trail

Golden Valley Waterfall

↓

Red Coral Waterfall

↓

Belong Waterfall

↓

Labuan Kebo Waterfall

↓

Melanting Waterfall

↓

FINISH

Munduk Main Road

This is important because once you reach Melanting Waterfall, you do not need to walk all the way back to Golden Valley.

You can continue from Melanting toward the Munduk main road.

This creates a much more natural one-way exploration of Munduk.

Step 1 – Start at Golden Valley Waterfall

We recommend beginning your trek at Golden Valley Waterfall.

If you are driving yourself, you can park your vehicle near the appropriate roadside parking area, making sure that your vehicle is parked safely and does not obstruct traffic or local access.

From the starting area, the walk to Golden Valley Waterfall itself is relatively short.

Depending on your exact starting point and walking pace, allow approximately 15 minutes to reach the waterfall.

Golden Valley is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and is a beautiful introduction to the Munduk waterfall landscape.

Take your time here.

You don’t need to rush to the next waterfall.

Step 2 – Follow the Trail Toward Red Coral Waterfall

After visiting Golden Valley, continue by following the trail signs toward Red Coral Waterfall.

This is where the experience begins to feel more like a genuine forest trek.

You will walk through green vegetation and mountain terrain rather than simply visiting individual waterfall viewpoints by vehicle.

Red Coral is one of the waterfalls that forms part of the traditional Munduk waterfall trekking experience.

Take some time to enjoy the forest surroundings before continuing.

Step 3 – Continue to Belong Waterfall

From Red Coral, continue along the trail toward Belong Waterfall.

Belong is another waterfall that can be included in the longer Munduk route.

The exact trail conditions can vary depending on weather and maintenance.

Some sections can be slippery after rain, so good footwear is strongly recommended.

If you are trekking independently, this is one of the reasons we recommend keeping your navigation map available on your phone.

Step 4 – Continue Toward Labuan Kebo Waterfall

Next, continue toward Labuan Kebo Waterfall.

Labuan Kebo is surrounded by dense tropical vegetation and gives you another opportunity to experience the quieter side of Munduk.

This section is not simply about moving from one waterfall to another.

Along the way you may see:

  • Coffee plants
  • Clove trees
  • Tropical gardens
  • Forest vegetation
  • Small streams
  • Farming areas
  • Mountain views
  • Traditional village paths

This agricultural landscape is an important part of Munduk.

Coffee and cloves are not attractions that were created for tourists.

They are part of everyday farming life in the village.

Step 5 – Finish at Melanting Waterfall

Continue toward Melanting Waterfall, one of the major waterfalls in Munduk.

Melanting is located in a green valley surrounded by tropical forest.

For many visitors, it is one of the most impressive waterfalls on the route.

But the most important thing for independent travelers is what happens after Melanting.

You do NOT have to return to Golden Valley.

Instead, continue following the direction from Melanting Waterfall toward Munduk main road.

This allows you to complete the trek as a one-way journey.

Finish: Munduk Main Road

After leaving Melanting Waterfall, continue toward the Munduk main road.

Once you arrive at the road, your waterfall trek is finished.

Now you have several choices depending on how you arrived in Munduk.

If You Came With Your Own Vehicle

If you drove your own scooter or car and left it near Golden Valley, you have two choices.

Option 1 – Walk Back

You can walk along the main road back toward your vehicle.

However, this adds additional walking time and is not the most exciting part of the trekking experience.

Option 2 – Arrange Local Transport

A more practical option is to find local transportation from the finishing area.

Depending on availability and your budget, you may be able to arrange:

Motorbike ride

or

Local car transportation

to take you back toward your vehicle.

The price can depend on the distance and the local driver, so agree on the price before starting the ride.

This is one reason why we recommend thinking about your transportation before beginning the trek.

If You Already Have a Private Driver

If you are traveling around Bali with your own private driver, the situation becomes much easier.

We recommend telling your driver:

“Please drop us at Golden Valley Waterfall and wait for us near the Munduk main road after Melanting Waterfall.”

Your driver can then travel separately by road and wait for you at the finishing point.

You simply enjoy the trek.

Your route becomes:

Driver drops you at Golden Valley

↓

Golden Valley

↓

Red Coral

↓

Belong

↓

Labuan Kebo

↓

Melanting

↓

Munduk Main Road

↓

Your driver is waiting

This is, in our opinion, one of the easiest ways to experience the Munduk waterfalls without booking a full tour.

What Makes This Route Special?

Munduk is famous for its waterfalls.

But as people who live here, we believe the waterfalls are only part of the experience.

Between the waterfalls you are walking through the landscape of our village.

You may see:

☕ Coffee Plantations

Coffee has been part of farming life in the Munduk highlands for generations.

🌱 Clove Plantations

Cloves are another important part of the agricultural landscape.

🌿 Tropical Forest

The cool mountain environment creates a lush green forest landscape.

🏡 Village Life

Walking allows you to see parts of Munduk that you may never notice from a car.

👨‍🌾 Local Farming

Depending on the season, you may see local farmers working in their gardens.

These are not staged tourist attractions.

They are simply part of our everyday life.

Can You Explore Munduk Waterfalls Without a Guide?

Yes.

We believe it is important to say this clearly.

If you are comfortable hiking independently and have a good navigation app or map, you can explore the Munduk waterfall area yourself.

AllTrails provides a useful reference route for the Munduk Waterfalls area. However, recent AllTrails reviews also show why visitors should prepare carefully: some hikers have reported overgrown sections, slippery terrain, limited signage and difficulty finding parts of the route without navigation.

So if you choose to trek independently:

  • Download or save your map
  • Bring enough drinking water
  • Wear proper shoes
  • Check the weather
  • Allow enough time
  • Do not rush
  • Pay attention to signs
  • Be careful on wet stairs and slopes
  • Keep your phone charged
  • Avoid entering areas that appear restricted

And most importantly:

Do not assume that every trail condition will be exactly the same as shown on an online map.

Weather and local trail conditions can change.

Why Consider a Local Guide?

If you want to support the local community, hiring a local guide is another excellent option.

A map can show you where a waterfall is.

But a local guide can show you what is around the waterfall.

Our local guides can explain:

  • Coffee farming
  • Clove farming
  • Tropical plants
  • Village life
  • Local traditions
  • The history and character of Munduk
  • The different waterfalls
  • Local trails
  • Where to stop for photographs
  • How to adjust the route according to conditions

Our local trekking team is based directly in Munduk Village, and our guides offer several route options depending on how much time and how many waterfalls you want to explore.

  • Rain jacket
  • Extra clothes if you plan to get wet
  • Phone with offline navigation
  • Power bank

  • Cash

The Munduk trails include stairs, slopes, uneven surfaces and, after rain, potentially muddy or slippery sections. The local guide team also recommends comfortable trekking shoes and notes that routes may be adjusted according to weather and trail conditions.

Best Time to Trek Munduk Waterfalls

The cooler morning hours are generally comfortable for trekking.

Starting earlier also gives you more time to enjoy the waterfalls and surrounding landscape without feeling rushed.

Munduk receives significant rainfall, however, so conditions can change.

After rain:

  • Stairs can become slippery
  • Forest paths can become muddy
  • Water levels can increase
  • Some sections may require more care

Always consider the weather before starting.
