West Bali Hiking & Menjangan Island Snorkelling – An Adventure into Bali’s Wild Side

West Bali Hiking & Menjangan Island Snorkelling – An Adventure into Bali’s Wild Side

By – Max

When planning our holiday in Bali, we wanted to experience more than beaches and temples. We were looking for an adventure that would take us beyond the usual tourist destinations and into Bali’s untouched natural wilderness.

That’s exactly what we found on the West Bali Hiking & Menjangan Island Snorkelling Combination Tour with Bali Local Tour Guide.

From the moment we booked the tour until we returned to our hotel, everything was perfectly organised. It quickly became one of the most memorable days of our entire trip.

An Early Journey to West Bali

Our adventure began before sunrise when our private driver arrived at our accommodation exactly on time.

The drive to West Bali National Park took approximately three hours, but it was comfortable, relaxing, and incredibly scenic. Along the way, we stopped for breakfast, which was included in the tour, giving us a chance to stretch our legs before continuing toward Bali’s remote northwest coast.

As we travelled further away from the busy tourist areas, the landscapes became increasingly wild and untouched. It already felt like we were discovering a completely different side of Bali.

Upon arrival, we boarded a traditional boat that carried us across the calm waters to the protected area surrounding Menjangan Island, where our local guide warmly welcomed us.

Hiking Through Bali’s Untouched Wilderness

Our first activity was a guided nature hike through the forests of West Bali National Park.

This wasn’t a typical tourist trail.

Instead, it felt like a genuine wilderness adventure.

Walking beneath towering trees, surrounded by natural forest and complete silence, we truly felt as though we had stepped into Bali’s wild side. There were no crowds, no busy roads, and very few signs of civilisation—just nature in its purest form.

Along the way, our guide introduced us to the local ecosystem and pointed out several native animals living freely within the national park.

One thing we particularly appreciated was the respectful approach to wildlife. Rather than disturbing the animals or trying to get as close as possible, our guide encouraged us to observe them from a distance, allowing them to remain completely undisturbed in their natural habitat.

That made the experience feel much more authentic and responsible.

The hike itself lasted approximately one to one and a half hours. Although we personally wished it could have been even longer because we enjoyed it so much, every minute offered beautiful scenery and a refreshing escape into nature.

Our First Snorkelling Adventure

After completing the hike, it was time for something completely new.

Neither of us had ever been snorkelling before.

To be honest, we weren’t even sure whether it would be something we would enjoy.

We couldn’t have been more wrong.

Within moments of putting on our masks and lowering our faces beneath the crystal-clear water, an entirely new world appeared before us.

The coral reefs surrounding Menjangan Island were absolutely breathtaking.

Brightly coloured corals stretched across the seabed while countless tropical fish swam peacefully around us.

It was unlike anything we had ever experienced.

Then, just a minute after entering the water, something extraordinary happened.

A Barracuda appeared.

Seeing such an impressive fish in the wild immediately turned our first snorkelling experience into something unforgettable.

But our incredible luck didn’t stop there.

A graceful Sea Turtle slowly glided past us, completely unbothered by our presence. Watching it move effortlessly through the clear blue water was one of the most peaceful moments of our entire holiday.

The underwater world was astonishingly quiet.

Floating weightlessly above the coral reef, surrounded only by the sounds of our own breathing, created a feeling of complete calm unlike anything we had experienced before.

Then, just when we thought the adventure couldn’t become any more exciting, we noticed movement below us.

Approximately ten metres beneath the surface, a reef shark calmly swam across the reef.

Although we knew reef sharks are generally harmless to snorkellers, seeing one in its natural habitat was both thrilling and slightly intimidating.

It was one of those unforgettable moments where excitement and respect for nature come together perfectly.

Lunch by the Sea

After our incredible first snorkelling session, we returned to shore for lunch.

A simple picnic-style meal of sandwiches and crispy fries was served, along with plenty of drinking water to help us recharge before heading back into the ocean.

Sometimes the simplest meals taste the best after a morning full of adventure.

More Incredible Marine Life

Our second snorkelling session was every bit as beautiful as the first.

Although nothing could quite match the excitement of seeing a barracuda, sea turtle, and reef shark all within the same morning, the colourful coral gardens and endless variety of tropical fish continued to amaze us.

Every time we looked beneath the surface, we discovered something new.

It was impossible not to smile.

One of Our Greatest Bali Memories

Looking back, this experience offered everything we could have hoped for.

Untouched rainforest.

Protected wildlife.

Crystal-clear tropical waters.

World-class coral reefs.

Incredible marine life.

Professional guides.

Excellent organisation.

Comfortable transportation.

And the feeling of discovering one of Bali’s least-visited natural treasures.

In fact, this became our second favourite experience in Bali, surpassed only by the unforgettable night we spent camping on Mount Batur, where we became engaged.

That says everything about how special this adventure truly was.

If you’re searching for an experience that combines the beauty of West Bali National Park with the spectacular underwater world of Menjangan Island, this tour is an absolute must.

It offers a perfect balance of hiking, wildlife, snorkelling, and relaxation, all while showcasing a side of Bali that many visitors never get the chance to see.

We cannot recommend Bali Local Tour Guide highly enough.

This wasn’t just another tour—it was a true wilderness adventure and one of the greatest memories of our entire Bali journey.
